What does CAdES mean?

The term CAdES stands for CMS Advanced Electronic Signatures. The Cryptographic Message Syntax (CMS) provides a framework for digitally signed documents. CAdES (CMS Advanced Electronic Signatures) shares almost all aspects in common with XAdES, in terms of its security properties (and how it is maintained) but with one big difference - CAdES is intended to be deployed only in the use case of signing binary data.
